Adam and I spent a fabulous 5 days in New York, April 30th-May 4th. Adam had a week break in between semesters so we thought we'd go on a fun trip before he started his last year of school. Horray! We ended up getting our flights and hotel basically free with our credit card rewards so we were able to spend a little more money on some fun things while we were there.
I had been to New York for a quick trip a few years ago but I didn't get to see everything I wanted to. And Adam had never been so it was a lot of fun exploring the city together. At first we were going to bring Brooklyn because we wanted to do a family trip but after talking to some friends we decided to just leave her home. Boy am I glad we didn't cart her along. It would have been impossible to see as many things as we did. However we missed her like crazy and couldn't wait to get home to her.
Day 1 | April 30th
Our flight left Salt Lake at about 10:00 am on Monday morning. I was holding back the tears as I said goodbye to Brooklyn. So sad! But we were excited to get our trip started. After a few delays with our airplane we were off to NYC!!
Our flight arrived in New Jersey at about 4:30 pm. We took the extremely overpriced train to Manhattan and it dumped us off in the middle of the city. We were so lost. We stopped next to a building to get directions on our phones and get our footing in the city. We suddenly realized we were standing right next to Madison Square Garden. Crazy! We finally figured out where our hotel was so we bought a Metro Card to last us for the whole week we were there and headed to our hotel in Brooklyn.
We were still a little confused how the subways worked so we ended up taking an express train that didn't stop at the correct stop and had to walk 10 blocks back to our hotel. It wouldn't have been so bad but we were both so tired and hungry from our flight and we had a huge suit case Adam was lugging around. Come to find out there is a subway stop right outside of our hotel. It was perfect for the rest of the week.
We decided to stay in Brooklyn rather than in the heart of the city because the hotels were a lot cheaper. It was about a 10-15 subway ride outside of the city which was terribly long on nights we were extremely tired but it was totally worth it for how much we saved. We stayed at a Best Western and it was actually a really nice hotel even though our room was teeny tiny.
We got to the hotel and just rested for a little bit. Here is the view of Manhattan from our hotel. The skyline is so pretty.
We walked through Chinatown and ate in Little Italy. We walked up and down the main street in Little Italy and it was so funny all the people that were trying to convince us to eat at their restaurant. There were also lots of little shops.
We started heading back to the subway and Adam realized he lost his Metro Card. We had just spent $30 on it so we were pretty bummed. We almost just bought a new one but Adam called the restaurant and they still had it. We were so surprised! So we went all the way back and got it (longest walk of my life). From there on out we made sure to keep better track of our Metro Cards. We were SO tired after all that so we called it a night.
